Cabals are the basic building blocks of mage society. They consist of more than one mage throwing in together for a common goal. They have some sort of theme, and they often share a sanctum. Reasons for forming a cabal include mutual protection, mutual hatred, economy, common goals, and other things.
Mages who do not belong to any cabal are called Solitaries and are not as trusted as other mages.
