Status
From SCMage
This page is for Consilium and Order Status, specifically. It is a measure of how respected a mage is in their Order or the Consilium at large. It is controlled by players, and moderated by the Storytellers. All Status changes should be moderated by STs.

Mechanical effects of Status
Status counts as an Equipment bonus to relevant Social challenges with other members of the Consilium / Order. The character must invoke their Status for this. Codex has Status 4, so he is considered “Respected”. In character, Codex says, “You will obey me, as I am Respected in this Consilium.” He then gets +4 to his Presence+Intimidation draw.
A mage must have at least 1 Dot in Order Status to have access to resources of that Order.
A mage must have at least 1 Dot in Consilium Status to be recognized as under the authority and protection of the Consilium. In general, if a mage has no Consilium Status, any other mage can attack them with impunity.
Determining Status
Draw Intelligence+Politics. Cannot be used to determine Status of an Order outside the mage's own.
Time of Effect
Status changes go into effect immediately after the announcement or poll is conducted. If the character has Status Points, those Points are adjusted immediately as well. If Codex, the Hierarch, has Status 4 and has spent 2 Status Points this month, then if his Status is decreased by 1, he now instantly has only 1 Point left to spend.
Order Status
Raising and Lowering
A member of the Order steps forward in an Order caucus and states the reasoning for change in standing (the praiseworthing or heinous deeds that were done). The Storyteller can start a poll too. The change in Status is exactly +1 or -1.
An out-of-character poll is conducted. Players state whether the member in question has acted in a way to change their standing to the desired level, in the eyes of their character. Remember, "respect" doesn't equal "like". Check the Hierarchies of Good Deeds and Sins - the character should be performing deeds above their Status on the Good Deeds chart for a raise, or below their Status on the Sins chart for a lower. Sum the yes votes and subtract the no votes, weighted by each character's Status. The total must be at least twice the character's current Status.
Another raising (or lowering, if that was the survey in question) survey cannot be conducted for that character for the next X chapters, where X is the character's current (new if changed) Status. For example, if a raising survey was conducted, one has to wait to do another, but one can do a lowering survey on the same character immediately.
Consilium Status
Officer powers
Hierarch
Has Status Points equal to their Status Dots to spend per month. Spends 1 Point to grant or remove 1 Dot of Status from any member of the Consilium. Can grant or remove the first Dot for free.
Councilors
Has Status Points equal to their Status Dots to spend per month. Spends 1 Point to grant or remove 1 Dot of Status from any member of their Order. A simple majority of Councilors may each spend one point to increase or decrease the Hierarch’s or another Councilor’s Status by one Dot. Can grant or remove the first Dot of an Order member for free. (if an Order only has one active character, the other Councilors can choose to not accept that Order at the table)
Provosts
Assistant to the Councilor, appointed by that Councilor. Records Favors, and can remove Consilium Status from those who fail to fulfill a fair Favor, or those who demand a Favor be fulfilled in an egregious way.
Heralds
All the Heralds have access to a central Status Point pool equal to highest Status of Hierarch or Councilors. Any Herald can spend 1 Point from that pool to grant or remove 1 Dot of Status from any member of the Consilium except the Hierarch or Councilors. Records Favors, and can remove Consilium Status from those who fail to fulfill a fair Favor, or those who demand a Favor be fulfilled in an egregious way. Cannot grant or remove the first dot.
Sentinels
Can remove one Status from any member of the Consilium for violating the local Lex Magica, including the first Dot.
Scorn and Commendation
This is a member referendum that works like the Order Status poll, except that:
- The poll is in-character, the announcement usually witnessed by a neutral Provost or Herald. Characters come forward to support or refute the announcement and status change.
- The total weighted vote must be at least 10 times the character's current status.
- Another such survey cannot be conducted for the next 3 chapters.
Punishment
By unanimous decision of the Ruling Council, a stigma can be imposed, instantly stripping a character of some or all Status for the duration of the stigma. The Hierarch or the Councilors can choose to end the stigma early.
Passage of Time
If a character is active for 10 consecutive chapters without a Status decrease, they get +1 Status, up to Status 3.
- A character who attends a game chapter is active. If the player doesn't attend a game, but instead interacts with other characters on the mailing list during this time, then this may count too.
If a character is not active for 5 consecutive chapters, then their Status decreases by 1, to a minimum of 1 Status.
